HOLOCENE:EXODUS is a heavy “4x” strategy tabletop game (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) for 3-6 players ages 14 and up. A complete game takes about 120 minutes per player, although there are ways to shorten the game (within the rules!) to fit it into a single night of gaming with your friends.

In the game, a massive cataclysm is going to destroy the planet and everything on it. The players (“Houses”) must find a way to get as many of their Citizens and resources off-planet as they can.

Text reading 'To take it step by step...'

As a House, the first thing you’ll do is build your House’s territory. After gathering all the pieces and components together, each House will take turns placing hexes to build out a unique territory. This will be your House territory for the game.

After that, you’ll choose one of the Cataclysms. There are two potential Cataclysms to choose from in the base game: Cosmic Barrage and Beast from the Deep. But there are six more available in expansion sets! Either way, you’ll be selecting one of the Cataclysms to play with for the rest of the game, and it’s that Cataclysm that will be the game’s “ticking time bomb” to the end of the world.

Text that reads 'After that, the rounds begin!'
Two game cards, one labeled PEACE with a woman on the front, and the other labeled WAR with a war scene, and arrows indicating a cyclical game mechanic.

Each Round has an Initiative Phase, in which Houses will take turns choosing four Initiative tiles to use.

Initiatives are the heart of the game and represent the actions you’ll be able to perform as you play. There are three types of Initiatives: Mobility, Industry, and Dichotomy. And each of the Initiative tiles is double-sided, giving you a choice of one of two actions to complete per tile.

Text says: 'During a typical round, you'll be...'.

Three playing cards labeled Governance, Religion, and Defenses, each with symbols: a government building, a religious crescent moon with a cross, and a shield, on a grid background.
Three racing game cards labeled 1, 2, and 3 with a yellow to orange gradient background and red, yellow, and black stripes in the top corner on a black background.

You’ll be trying to complete the objectives available as Exodus Preps, which are worth Exodus Points, which you need to win the game.

You’ll be trying to outmaneuver the other Houses to complete and earn the available Opportunity card.

And you’ll be moving your Citizens and Units around the board, negotiating with other Houses, going to War, trying to Steal, and all kinds of other fun stuff!

Text saying 'And eventually, the round will end' against a black background.

The Round will conclude with a Resolution Phase, in which Exodus Preps will be scored, some cards will be played or traded in for resources, and other housekeeping will occur.

Then it’s on to the start of another Round!

ABOUT THE CREATORS

Back in 2020, when COVID was in full swing, three longtime friends and avid board gamers from the Philadelphia area—Erik Smith, Rob Stewart, and Evan Young—were playing a lot of board games remotely with their group of friends and to pass the time.

Digging hard into strategy games like Twilight Imperium IV, Nemesis, Dune (the 1979 version!), Arkham Asylum, Betrayal at House on the Hill, and more, they thought to themselves… wouldn’t it be fun to try to create the biggest, baddest, most intriguing, most strategically deep, and unique game of all time? With more cards, more pieces, more tokens, and more minis than any other game on the market?

BUT… and this was a big one… could we do all of the above and still make it even simpler to learn and engaging for all players? AND include some unique negotiating mechanics that no one had ever tried?

And that’s how HOLOCENE:EXODUS was born. Fast-forward four years, across at least five different evolutions of the game, thousands of hours of development, and hundreds of hours of play testing… and that’s exactly what we think we’ve done.
